Michael Merrill. That is me! Look how professional. Doesn't happen often so enjoy!
Enough about my visual appeal. Lets get to the stuff that seems to be important to others. Like employment. I work as a junior software technician at the University of Dayton Research Institute. It is incredible and I feel lucky every day.
I love technology and spend most of my time working with it. I have to admit however, science and technology was not my first love. I spent the majority of my life fascinated with art. My first foray into higher education was an attempt to learn the secret ninja ways of animation. All my passion was spent trying to bring characters to life with fake motion and exaggerated proportions.
My list of loves, topped by art, has grown and changed over the years but writing has never really made the cut. Nevertheless, with encouragement, I have been enjoying writing more and more.
Here you can see a couple of the assignments I have written over the past year or so. Writing is much easier when it is for a subject that I enjoy. I tend to use proper English with decent grammar and modern word processors fix my poor spelling, so just writing out my thoughts has never been too difficult. There is always room for improvement of course but structure, flow, and subject matter are more of a concern to me. I would definitely like to increase my vocabulary as well. Proper formatting and standards are not my strong suit. I don't like that part of writing at all. Sometimes the benefit of standards can pull things together but I feel like they should just be a guide, not mandatory. Writing quality is subjective and just because a paper does not conform does not mean it is bad. I digress, sometimes it is necessary to pander the prose.
In the end, I feel like writing is pretty much just like anything else. Practice is the number one way to improve.
As far as English 1201 goes. I feel like I have done well enough for an A. Albeit a low end A. I think I could have done better if I had more time but life protests. After dropping the rest of my classes this semester my concentration has improved but at first it was a little difficult to keep up. I think it is actually difficult to peer review. I tried to contribute as much as I could but other students tend to have other interests and it is hard to give advice when I don't understand the subject matter. The class has definitely taught me that my writing is not as good as it could be. I know little to nothing about proper formatting and standards (which may explain my dislike.) I have learned a bit about using the standards though, so I guess that is a good thing.
So enjoy the assignments. My research paper was written about the 3d printing revolution and how it may one day impact everyone's life. Also included is a visual analysis of a picture I took a while ago. In addition to the class assignments I added some fan fiction I wrote for a forum contest based in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I wrote this a few years ago, so you will probably be able to see where my writing skills have evolved and where my habits still remain.
